Week 2 Song
I decided to listen to "Soldier's Joy" by Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers. I decided to listen to it because I got a good laugh at the name of the group. When the song first started, I immediately thought of a movie I've watched since I was a little kid, called O Brother Where Art Thou. It takes place in the south during the Great Depression; the song just brought up feelings of being in a southern setting during the times of cowboys and the Civil War (especially because the song was played in 1864). The lyrics were very simple, but they brought up visions of Civil War veterans without an education living in poverty. There were also country dance influences in the lyrics, as if the song were made to play in country dance halls. Musically, I did enjoy the long breaks between verses to have instrumentals on the guitar and fiddle. It showcased the talent of the musicians. I don't normally listen to instruments played that way, especially the fiddle, but it was cool to reminisce about a movie I've loved all my life. I'm sure this song helped a lot of people have fun almost two hundred years ago.
First of all, I love that movie! That's awesome this song made you think of it. I do agree that the lyrics were pretty simple, and the long instrumentals were pretty cool. I particularly was a fan of the fiddle just because I thought it was quite impressive. I didn't think this song was that old, but I was kind of mind blown when I found that out. Also, good job on your blog!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that movie but after reading this and listening to the song I want to! I enjoyed the instrumental breaks as well I feel like it adds to the simple lyrics. Something else I liked about your post was the way you used history to show how old this song really is, and how you related it to your personal life growing up.

ReplyDeleteI have not seen that movie either but I have heard great things about it. I agree with you when you talk about having the longer breaks in between versus to be able to appreciate the talent of the musicians. Also I think it is cool how a song can bring back so many different memories.
